How to use the chess opening wheel
The wheel gives you a random opening in four steps.
- Pick your color. Load the Openings for White or Openings for Black list below so the wheel only lists openings you can start from.
- Choose a list. Load a ready-made list (White, Black, gambits, beginner-friendly) or type your own openings, one per line.
- Press spin. The wheel lands on one opening at random, with every opening equally likely.
- Play it. Set up the first moves on your board or on Lichess or Chess.com, and use the opening for the whole game.
Use cases and features
A random opening helps players who repeat the same lines, want to widen their repertoire, or need a quick way to settle what to play.
| Who | How they use the wheel | What they get |
|---|---|---|
| Improving club players | Spin before each game and play the result | A wider repertoire and fewer memorized habits |
| Beginners | Spin a beginner list such as Italian Game or London System | Sound, simple openings to learn one at a time |
| Coaches and teachers | Assign a spun opening to each student | Fair, varied practice with no arguing over choices |
| Friends and chess clubs | Play opening-roulette games | A fun twist on casual and blitz games |
| Streamers and content creators | Let viewers watch the spin, then play it live | Interactive videos and challenges |
| Repertoire builders | Spin through a candidate list | An unbiased way to test new openings |
Benefits of spinning for your opening:
- Breaks repetition. The wheel pushes you out of the same two or three lines.
- Teaches new structures. Each opening trains different pawn structures and plans.
- Removes decision fatigue. You stop choosing and start playing.
- Stays fair. Each opening has an equal chance on every spin.

Random opening wheel vs Chess960
This wheel picks a named opening from standard chess; it does not shuffle the pieces. Use it to vary your play from the normal starting position.
| Chess opening wheel | Chess960 (Fischer Random) | |
|---|---|---|
| Starting position | Standard | One of 960 shuffled setups |
| What is random | Which opening you play | Where the back-rank pieces start |
| Opening theory | Still applies | Mostly removed |
| Best for | Widening your repertoire | Playing without memorized lines |
If you want a shuffled start instead, search for a Chess960 position generator.
